Si uno quisiera imaginar cómo debía sonar la auténtica y pura música celta, se haría de una idea muy cercana escuchando a los maestros irlandeses The Chieftains en sus inicios. Estos primeros álbumes representan lo más puro, medieval, de la música folk irlandesa. La agrupación liderada por Paddy Moloney viene recorriendo más de cinco décadas difundiendo su música por el mundo, disfrutando de una popularidad inimaginable para una agrupación de música celta. Ya antes de la mitad de su carrera la consagración era inminente hasta llegar a ser absoluta empezando a compartir escenarios y colaborando con infinidad de importantes músicos de diferentes estilos y lugares, por nombrar algunos: Van Morrison, Ry Cooder, James Galway, Lorenna McKennitt, Sinéad O'Connor, Nanci Griffith, Carlos Nuñez, Mick Jagger y la lista sigue... Interpretando la música de Bretaña en "Celtic Wedding", gallega en el álbum "Santiago", en estilo más country con músicos de Nashville en "Another Country" y hasta grabando su "The Chieftains in China" acompañados de la Chinese Ensemble. Llegando también a componer bandas sonoras de películas: "Barry Lyndon" de Stanley Kubrick, "Tristan and Isolde", "The Year of the French", "The Grey Fox", entre otras.
Paddy Moloney en tin whistle y la uilleann pipe, esa gaita irlandesa de fuelle bajo el brazo, con un sonido muy particular y distintivo de otras gaitas, mejor entonada para la melodía, la melancolía, sonidos paisajistas, infaltable en las danzas y salones de baile. Michael Tubridy en flauta, concertina y tin whistle, Seán Potts también en tin whistle (flauta más pequeña, de sonido potente y metálico), los violines de Martin Fay y Seán Keane, el bodhrán o delgado tambor de Peadar Mercier, reemplazando a David Fallon que había estado en la primera grabación. En 1973, para "The Chieftains 4", se uniría su clásico arpista Derek Bell (del cual hay dos álbumes en esta posada), entonando y acompañando las mejores melodías de Turlough O'Carolan con su estilo renacentista.
La etapa "menos" consagrada es la que personalmente más preferimos en este lugar, un poco por no haber escuchado en detalle toda su extensa discografía, tal vez algún pequeño prejuicio de tanta colaboración, compilados, nos lo impida al no haber nada nuevo que no hubieran hecho ya bajo el sol; pero más que nada, y sobre todo, por la pureza tradicional y la frescura de su por lo menos 10 primeros trabajos. Tampoco, y por suerte, han tratado de modernizar su sonido como a otras agrupaciones del estilo. De todas maneras y en todas las etapas siempre se encuentran grandes piezas y canciones, discos épicos como "The Celtic Harp" del año 1993, por dar un ejemplo posterior a esta primera etapa.
